Isaiah 55:8

ONE DAY AT A TIME

Matthew 6:34 (NLT), "So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today."

January is that time of year when so many people are making “New Year’s” resolutions. They are either deciding to do something they haven’t been doing, or deciding to stop doing something they have been doing. The reason is always the same. They want to improve their lives — change something they aren’t happy with.

I used to make New Year’s resolutions, only to find myself breaking them before January was over. I’d hear my thoughts say things like, “It’s too hard!”  “You can’t change! ”  “You’ve already blown it!”  “So much for this year!”  “Maybe next year!”  I had an “all or nothing” mindset, and it never worked. My intentions were good, but resolving to change an entire year always proved to be way too big of a bite for me to chew!

There’s an old riddle that asks the question, “How do you eat an elephant?”  The answer is so simple it’s easy to miss. The answer is, “One bite at a time.”

For me, New Year’s resolutions are like elephants — way too big to eat!  In the past few years, I’ve started making daily resolutions instead — one “bite” at a time — and it has made all the difference for me!  It’s so simple, but I missed the wisdom of it for years.

A little 24-hour period is much easier for me to manage.  I usually go to bed experiencing the success of accomplishing my goals for the day, but even when I don’t, it was just one day — not an entire year – so it’s not such a big deal.  I cut myself some slack, turn the lights out, and look forward to tomorrow’s fresh start.

Lord, thank you for the tremendous wisdom you had in creating the 24-hour day/night cycle. You knew I could swallow one day at a time.
