Dave Allen created a blog entry Why I do Nursing Hom...
Hi All
When I perform at nursing homes, I charge a small fee ,just enough to cover my cost and little else.
To give you an Idea of what I charge, last year I did a 144 performances and after expensives my net income for the year was less than $1000.
So I am offten asked why I do these shows, if it not for the money. For me it’s an easy answer. I do it for the residences. I love when I get to, share a smile, a hug or a thank you, after the show. This is what makes it all worthwhile.
Then there are those special moments, that I will never forget. I do have my favorite ones.
For example, there was the time, I was about half way into the show. When I notice one of the staff members pointing at a man and his wife, who were coming down the hall to the dining room, where I was doing the show. Before long every staff member was looking, and pointing at the couple, many with their mouths dropping, almost as in shock.
After the show I ask one of staff what that was all about.
It seems this gentleman was a fairly new resident of the home. For over 4 weeks they had tried, to get him to join in the programs, and activities, but he hated being there and refused to leave his room.
But he could hear my music from his room, and he told his wife, who was visiting, that he wanted to hear the music better. She told him the only way that would happen, was if he would leave his room, to join the rest of the residence. He answered “well let’s go”. And he left the room.
That kind of reaction, is worth far more than any amount of money they could pay me.

Dave Allen replied to the topic Re: Carma Grimes in the forum.Hello
Love the site. I am from Clinton, Iowa/ I am a disabled Vietnam Veteran. I am retired due to health reasons. But that leaves me lots of free time to get out and sing.
I mostly sing at nursing homes within a 150 mile radius of Clinton.
Below is the story of how my granddaughters started me singing I hope you will take time to read it.
It all started when my granddaughters Danica and her sister Erica stopped by for a visit, one day and heard me singing along with the song “I saw the light” that was playing on the TV. After the song was over Danica came to me and ask what the song meant, when they said I saw the light. I explained what I thought it meant. Then Erica ask what was meant when they said No Sorrow in sight. So I explained that part of the song. The girls Danica was 4 and Erica was 6, picked the song apart, wanting to know the meaning behind every line. They understood, at that young age there was deeper meaning to what was being said in the songs. I always knew that myself but their questions made me take a little more attention to the lyrics as well.
Then every time my three Granddaughters, (Layla is the older sister to Danica and Erica) came over they would ask me to sing for them. I soon ran out of tapes to play.
So 10 years ago, I bought a guitar and two books on how to play, "Guitars for Dummies" and "Country and Blues Guitar For The Musically Hopeless". I taught myself to play a few chords. And I started playing and singing, an hour a day, so we would not run out of songs to sing.
The best part of the story is that, I am thankful that the girls, brought the music into my life. For over 12 years I had to carry tanks of Oxygen with me, everywhere I went. I used the oxygen part time, but it always had to be with me. This was due to an allergic reaction I had, that left my lungs damaged.
As a result of practicing an hour a day singing , My lungs became stronger to the point that, for the past 10 years, I no longer need the tanks. I use to call my Granddaughters my "Baby Girls" now I call them, my “Special Angels”.
